The Japanese Tea Ceremony is called Chado, Sado or Chanoyu in Japanese. Tea ceremony has been a Japanese tradition for over 1000 years.
It is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, called Matcha, together with traditional Japanese sweets to balance with the bitter taste of the tea.
Tea ceremony is not just about drinking Matcha, it is also the "Teishu" (host), offering hospitality to the "Kyaku" (guest). "Chaji" is a formal tea party where you can "learn the Japanese heart of hospitality".
It is communicating with others with a caring and thankful heart. Japan is blessed with richness brought about by four distinctive seasons. Taking in such element of each season in abundance, Teishu, a host, ushers in Kyaku, a guest, into a different world.
Teishu may be allowed to treat Kyaku with the utmost hospitality within the limited time ―This is "Chaji."

  • Procedure for preparing and serving tea:
  • Place the tea leaves in the chawan by using the chashaku.
    Stir with the chasen.
    Bow and receive the chawan with the right hand, and place it on the palm of the left hand.
    Put the hot water from the kama into the chawan using the hishaku.
    Stir with the chasen.
    Bow and receive the chawan with the right hand, and place it on the palm of the left hand.
    Rotate the chawan clockwise three times with the right hand.
    After drinking the tea, wipe the part of the chawan which the lips touched with the right hand, and rotate the chawan counterclockwise, then return it to the host.
POINT!
- Please bear in mind that you will take off your shoes and sits on the tatami mat, so mini-skirts will be inappropriate.
